Racism in Child Welfare and How to Be an Ally

Through the lens of SFCASA’s core value of Cultural Humility, volunteer advocates will consider and deepen their understanding of the biases faced by children and families experiencing the child welfare system. Trainees will also gain understanding of taking a strengths-based approach in their relationship-based advocacy.

Goals for this class include:

  • Build on the trainees’ understanding of how a child and their family experiences the child welfare system.

  • Understand that difference is both valuable and can also be challenging.

  • Begin to distinguish between facts, beliefs, and assumptions and build awareness of bias and its impact.

  • Develop an action plan to understand that you don’t always understand.
