âś… What a CASA is

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. A CASA is a trained volunteer who shows up consistently for a young person in foster care—checking in, speaking up, and helping you navigate systems like school, court, and housing.

If you're a young person in care, or you work with one, you can request a CASA to help make sure that youth has someone dedicated to listening and advocating for what they need.

🗣️ What a CASA does

A CASA volunteer:

  • Builds a one-on-one relationship with a young person

  • Helps make sure their voice is heard in court

  • Connects them with services and opportunities

  • Shows up regularly—sometimes for years

They’re not case managers or social workers. They’re consistent, caring adults who choose to show up for you.

🙋‍♀️ Who can request a CASA

You can request a CASA for a youth if you're:

  • A young person (ages 0–21) with a dependency case in SF

  • A caregiver, social worker, attorney, or community member supporting a youth in foster care

We especially welcome requests for:

  • Youth ages 12–21

  • TAY (Transitional Age Youth) navigating independence

  • Youth with limited adult support

  • LGBTQ+ youth, BIPOC youth, and youth with disabilities

“My CASA was the only adult who stuck around and actually asked what I wanted.”
— Dana, age 18

đź’ˇ Why this matters

Young people in foster care often face decisions made without their voice. A CASA makes sure youth are not just seen — but heard, respected, and supported as they build their future.
