What is VITA?
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is administered by the IRS to provide free tax preparation to eligible taxpayers. State and Federal returns are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers, who undergo training and are required to pass an IRS exam. SF CASA’s VITA site exclusively serves the foster youth population.
What is the FYTC?
The California Foster Youth Tax Credit (FYTC) is fully refundable tax credit for current and former foster youth in the state. To be eligible, youth must also qualify for the CA EITC. Eligible youth must be 18 to 25 years at the end of the tax year and must have been in CA’s foster care system on or after their 13th birthday. In 2024, eligible youth can claim up to $1,117 for the FYTC!
Our Mission
2024 FOSTER YOUTH TAX PROJECT AND CHALLENGE
SF CASA’s VITA site completed its first year during the 2023 tax season. During its first year, VITA volunteers assisted nearly 50 clients and secured over $80,000 in refunds across multiple tax years.
For the upcoming 2024 tax season, our ambitious goal is to help serve 100 young adults with free, high-quality tax preparation assistance and we need YOUR help! According to John Burton Advocates for Youth, only 6% of eligible youth and young adults affiliated with foster care in San Francisco received the fully refundable CA Foster Youth Tax Credit during the 2023 tax season. Our mission is to ensure all eligible youth claim this credit!
