At 2˝, Rory had been severely beaten by his parents and had lived in five different foster homes. His speech was delayed; he shunned physical contact and became aggressive when frustrated. He was separated from his siblings, his extended family, and everything familiar. Alone in an overburdened, underfunded system, too young to speak for himself, Rory was in danger of becoming one of thousands of children who all too often fall through the cracks in the system. At the request of a judge, an SFCASA volunteer, Jim, was assigned to the case. Jim worked to ensure that Rory had regular visits with his siblings, and that he received appropriate evaluations resulting in the healthcare, therapeutic, and educational interventions he needed. Jim advocated for Rory's placement in a structured foster home where the caregivers were successfully able to look after his needs. Over time Rory’s aggression diminished, his verbal and social skills improved, and he and his siblings have been reunited and placed together in an adoptive home.

Rory is just one of more than 334 children helped by SFCASA volunteers last year. Many more of San Francisco’s children need your help. Won't you make a gift today?
