It may be a surprise to some that the history of child abuse prevention and treatment in the United States is relatively recent. The longstanding need to better ensure the safety and well-being of children led to the passage of the Child Abuse Prevention Treatment Act (CAPTA) in 1974, the first child protection legislation to be enacted. Since the passage of CAPTA, Congress, at the urging of its constituents, has undertaken efforts to promote the identification, treatment and mitigation of child abuse in the United States. Addressing the Often Overseen Issue of Childrens Mental Health

The too often overlooked issue of children's mental health is being addressed by the Mental Health in Schools Act introduced by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn). He presented an act to ensure that mental health services are readily available for the children who need and deserve it. In promoting the act Sen. Franken had this to say: "Addressing the mental and emotional needs of our kids is just as important as keeping them safe from physical injury and illness," said Sen. SF District Attorney’s office Honors San Franciso’s Mentors for National Mentoring Month at Marcus Books in San Francisco

January is National Mentoring Month and yesterday evening SFCASA had the honor to participate in San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón’s inaugural mentor-advocate appreciation and recruitment event graciously hosted by Marcus Bookstore, the nation’s oldest African-American bookstore.  (If you’ve never visited Marcus Bookstore, be sure to check out both their San Francisco and Oakland locations!) SFCASA was joined by a number of its outstanding community partners, including Minds Matter, the YMCA, Seven Tepees, SFUSD’s Mentoring for Success Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters. All participating organizations staffed recruitment tables to answer questions and encourage involvement of those in search of volunteer

Hearts and Hopes- CASA volunteeer and jewelry designer team up to raise funds for SFCASA.

Tami Epstein has been an advocate for two siblings in foster care for over three years.  Rachel Clinnick, the designer behind Thalia Jewelry, wanted to do something to support her dear friend's volunteerism.  Rachel realized that while not everyone can volunteer once a week to meet with a child in need, there are other creative ways to support SFCASA.
