Ben - thanks for sharing. I remember when my first CASA youth told me she hated me. It was like a punch in the stomach. A few months later, she gave me a hug and said "thanks for not giving up on me." That was 5 years ago or so, and I still hold onto that as a CASA.

I'm just finishing Ashley's book. It's an extraordinary story of triumph within a system that can be quite ordinary at times. Ashley beat the odds that so often are stacked against abused and neglected children. I can't wait to hear her speak in person.

That is exactly what those that oppose the bill are saying- how does this bill serve to protect the children we claim we are trying to protect? This is a conversation that needs to be had before there is any resolution on this issue.

At the moment, CASA does not have a stance on this bill. As volunteers who go into the courtroom to advocate for the child it is easy to see both sides of the issue. Yes, we want transparency and we want the public to know that the dependency system could use some fixing. On the other hand, we also feel that in an environment that is usually so overwhelming for a youth, to have additional multiple strangers in the room might be quite traumatizing. We are currently doing additional research locally and with our national office to get more information on the bill and its effects.

I don't know much about this bill, but if we claim to value the protection of minors, then why would this protection not extend all the way to court cases where charges of lack of protection are heard?

Who do the bill's supporters think will be able to show up in court if this bill passes (i.e. who is not there already), and how would these newcomers help the system? It sounds pretty traumatizing. And does CASA have a stance?
