Ashley Rhodes-Courter
2011 SFCASA Featured Speaker
San Francisco CASA is pleased to have featured Ashley Rhodes-Courter at our luncheon celebrating 20 years in San Francisco. She is a leading example of the impact that one consistent and caring adult can provide to a vulnerable child in their search to find a loving “forever” home.
Ashley spent nine years of her life in fourteen different foster homes. With sharp memories of the bureaucratic details and emotional chaos that made up her childhood, her memoir Three Little Words reveals what it means to be an “orphan” in modern America. Ashley’s story is one of grit and determination-and numbers you won’t believe: seventy-three child welfare administrators, forty-four caseworkers, twenty-three attorneys, nineteen foster parents, seventeen therapists, three abuse registry workers, four judges, and, one Guardian ad Litem, (a type of CASA Volunteeer) who, in Ashley’s own words, is the one “who made the greatest difference in my life." Ashley recalled, “After going through over 80,000 documents involving my case plans, one of the papers listed me as having blue eyes. I have brown eyes. I have come to believe that every child in the foster care system deserves someone in their life that knows the color of their eyes.”
We were honored to have the talented and inspirational journalist, Belva Davis, host the day’s program.
Listen to the podcast of the interview with Ashley and SFCASA Program Director, Maya Durret about the Ashley's book and the need for the community to support CASA programs.
